The final months of the year include a festive holiday season that often means decorations and lighting for many Southborough MA homeowners.
While you add a touch of holiday spirit, maintain an energy-efficient home with these helpful tips:
Lighting
- Decorate with strings of LED lights for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas. The lights come in all colors and use less energy than traditional strings.
- You can actually put 24 strings of little LED lights on one socket without blowing a fuse. Your home can be decorated with fall color lights and move on to the December holidays with more colored LED lights.
- Welcome the trick and treaters with solar garden lights placed along your pathway and lawn. These subtle little lights are inexpensive and found at most major chain and hardware stores.
- Use charged solar lights carved pumpkins and other illuminated decor.
- If you usually change out your porch light with holiday colors, keep it up but opt for spiral fluorescent bulbs in colors so you can maintain an energy-efficient home.
- Keep the lights off in your front rooms when you've got holiday decor, like Christmas trees or Halloween scenes, lit up.
Prevent Heat Loss
- During holiday festivities like answering the door for trick-or-treaters or welcoming friends and family in for a holiday meal, keep your door closed as much as possible and the thermostat turned down to prevent excessive heat loss.
- Use your fireplace for a holiday glow with glass doors designed to reduce heat loss. The doors should be made of tempered glass with air intake vents on the frame.
Reduce Waste
- Compost pumpkins instead of throwing them away or forcing them down the garbage disposal. Cut them into small pieces or smash them and mix with rotting fall leaves in a compost pile or bin.
- Rinse the pumpkin seeds, dry them and put them out for the birds.
- The seeds can also be roasted with a little salt and salad oil.
