Most heating and air conditioning filters have instructions from the manufacturer to change them every three months. A great reminder of the time to change yours is the changing of the seasons. A good practice is to check the filter every month, just to make sure. A heavy pollen season, dry, dusty conditions and periods with unusually high humidity can often cause air filters to clog up faster than normal. So, do a quick check every month and, if all looks okay, change with the next season.
Heating and air conditioning filters do more than just keep contaminants out of our indoor air. They are also designed to help our home comfort systems run properly. A filter with a heavy accumulation of dust and grime reduces airflow. This makes your system work harder to produce the same results.
In addition to wasting energy and costing us more, clogged filters can cause dirt and grime to build up and back up in the system. Large deposits of this material can lead to trouble with the equipment components and result in a shorter lifespan. Just as dirt in a car's air filter can cause damage and engine failure, so too can dirt in your HVAC system.
Keeping air filters fresh and clean keeps the equipment in good condition and allows for better airflow. That airflow promotes better circulation, better heat and cooling distribution and better indoor air quality for your family.
